Through the Global Startup Awards Africa, we have unearthed over 7,500 UN Sustainable Development Goal aligned tech innovation startups with solutions in Agri Tech, Health Tech, ESG Tech, Commerce Tech, Industrial Tech and Women in Tech. With entrants from 54 of the 55 African nations, the process went through 3 rounds of judging using independent, industry and category experts, to reveal our 12 winners.

GSA Africa is here to support the startups and recognises the benefits for all, by collaborating with the private and public sector.

Day two is only open to those wishing to meet with the winners of GSA Africa, with a view to creating partnerships, business opportunities or to provide services.

AFRICAN SOLUTIONS

  • Agri Tech

    Most of the food produced for human consumption is wasted. This company converts pre-human consumption food waste into animal fodder and fertilizer, with a negative carbon process using fly larvae. The larvae is able to take a vegetable and turn it into a protein – a natural process at an affordable and constant price point.

    Currently based in Tanzania and Kenya. they plan to set-up two additional sites in East Africa and export to the EU.

  • Health Tech

    This Kenyan based company links patients and physicians within Africa. Where physicians are not available on the continent, the best will be sought globally also.

    The company is also creating an expert network with leading global hospitals to do exchange programmes with African practitioners.

  • Women in Tech

    This company from Egypt, re-purposes surplus food from restaurants, groceries, bakeries, and dessert shops that would otherwise be thrown away. App users directly contribute to saving food from being wasted, get fresh meals with a %50 discount, and help the environment at the same time.

  • ESG Tech

    This manufacturer from Kenya makes low-carbon, low-cost building materials from plastic waste. Their products are made through a low-emission manufacturing process that recycles, mixes, and moulds various plastic types into building materials.

    The interlocking blocks require low skilled labour and zero cement, being held in place by reinforced uprights. The blocks have been tested and approved, in the Netherlands for toxicity, strength and fire safety.

    In 2022, they plan to build their first factory in Ethiopia.

  • Industrial Tech

    In Nigeria, 9 million people use the bus every day. There are 75,000 buses in Lagos alone. This Nigerian based company is West Africa’s largest shared mobility platform that offers commuters predictable and reliable rides and road travel ticket services in real-time across Nigeria, Uganda and Ghana. With over half a million rides completed on the app, they is changing the way millions of people get around.

    Each vehicle has a QR code and tracker that links the passenger to the ride. All payment is done on the app.

  • Commerce Tech

    This commerce tech company from Nigeria, offers authenticated track and trace for pharma and consumer products, protecting consumers from the dangers of using counterfeit products and helping companies boost their sales, better understand their consumers, and recover lost market share.

    With 10,000 customers and 30 million products already available on the app, QR codes are put on products at distribution centres so that consumers can scan at purchase.

  • Founder of the Year

    This South African based company enables utilities to deliver cheaper, cleaner, and smarter energy services to residents. Their smart controller, HotBot, transforms electric water heaters into intelligent thermal batteries by heating water at the cheapest times while meeting end-user needs.

  • Best Newcomer

    The best newcomer from Uganda disrupts the $240bn farmer financing opportunity in Africa, providing digital loans through best-in class financial technology, alternative credit scoring algorithms, and a partnership to reach farmers at scale.

    Currently in Uganda and working with dairy farmers they are looking to expand into East African and support maise, oil seeds and coffee farmers.

  • Best Co-working Space

    This company builds and manages co-working spaces across 6 locations in South Africa. The spaces focus on the needs of individuals, teams, and enterprises by providing innovative spaces to be productive, grow their networks and stimulate business opportunities.
